Ilford XP 1
A monochrome film designed to be processed in colour film chemicals. Practically it enable users to get their films processed quickly alongside colour films. Technically it was a fine grain film, nominally 400asa but with a large amount of latitude.
XP 1 was superceded by XP 2 around 20 years ago so the 17m roll I acquired via eBay is well out of date. For some reason there is no date on the tin label so the actual expiry date is unknown.
While XP1, and XP2 were designed to be processed in C-41 colour chemicals, they also develope quite well in most monochrome developers. With Ilford XP1 Ilford introduced a special version of C41 without the colour processing elements. Practically most XP1 users used commercial processing facilities so it was not on the market for long.
Research suggested that stand processing is the better way to process older film. So this is how i processed the XP1 with varying results.
Although nominally a 400asa film using the guide of one stop for every ten years and estimating the film to be a little over twenty years old I rated the film at 100asa. In general this seems to have worked.
